chomp, by Katherine Pisarro-Grant

being a pearl was alright, but I much preferred being the oyster shell.
encapsulating the membranes and all.
I saw faces on the wall as they would flash
and chewed my tongue to spit the white ash
forth from my slimy walls. from me I fell,
being both the pearl and its shell.

Katherine Pisarro-Grant studies English and Russian language and literature. Her favorite word for “ocean” is the Old English “whale-road.”
